While Kacey Musgraves has brought her Golden Hour highlight "Rainbow" to a couple award show stages already, at Wednesday night's (Nov. 13) 2019 Country Music Association awards, she flashed back to a different "Rainbow" altogether -- with some help from a country legend.
Willie Nelson kicked off the performance of the Kermit the Frog-sung classic "Rainbow Connection," with Musgraves joining in for the second verse. The rendition felt a particularly tender one, with Nelson's somewhat strained sung-spoken delivery making for a heartstring-pulling contrast with Musgraves' impossibly smooth coo.
"Rainbow" was a two-time nominee at this year's CMA awards, for song of the year and video of the year, winning the latter prize for the Hannah Lux Davis-directed clip. Musgraves herself also won the award for female vocalist of the year shortly after her performance.
"Rainbow Connection" is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, debuting as part of The Muppet Movie in 1979. At the following year's Oscars, Kermit himself performed the song, though "Rainbow" lost the best original song trophy that year to "It Goes Like It Goes" from Norma Rae.
