MTV announced the first wave of performers for the 2019 Video Music Awards on Tuesday (Aug. 13).

Bad Bunny, Camila Cabello, J Balvin, Lil Nas X, Lizzo, Rosalia, and Shawn Mendes have been confirmed to take the stage at this year’s VMAs, bringing to the forefront a diverse and talented crowd, including Latin artists, LGTBQ country-rap stars, and African-American female rappers.

This multicultural lineup is a big difference from two years ago, when the awards show was the focal point of widespread criticism for not including “Despacito” -- the most-viewed video in history and the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 at the time in 2017 -- in its list of nominees, nor did MTV invite Luis Fonsi or Daddy Yankee to perform at the show.

Last year -- and after four consecutive years of not having a Latin category or performers -- memorable moments such as Cardi B winning best new artist, Camila Cabello nabbing artist and song of the year, Jennifer Lopez being recognized with the video vanguard award, J Balvin taking home a Moonman for “Mi Gente," and Maluma performing “Felices los Cuatro” in Spanish, really put Latin music center stage at the VMAs.

Having artists such as Bad Bunny, J Balvin and Rosalia take the stage at the 2019 VMAs further proves that Latin music and Spanish-language songs keep dominating streaming charts at a global scale.

The VMAs also recently announced that Missy Elliott will become the first female rapper to receive the Michael Jackson video vanguard award. Taylor Swift will also perform following the release of her highly anticipated album, “Lover.”

The 2019 VMAs, hosted by Sebastian Maniscalco, will air live from the Prudential Center in New Jersey on Monday, Aug. 26, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
