Watch Shawn Mendes Beg For 'Mercy' at the 2016 MTV EMAs

“Mercy,” the next single from Shawn Mendes’ No. 1 sophomore album Illuminate, is creeping up the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the 18-year-old singer-songwriter gave the emotional song an effective push on Sunday night (Nov. 6) at the 2016 MTV EMAs, held at the Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

After being introduced by a twerking Bebe Rexha, Mendes changed the mood of the show by beginning "Mercy" as a somber piano ballad and playing while encased in a four-side cube of projections. The innovative visual stunt soon rose and hovered over Mendes' grand piano, and the Canadian teen ended the performance by emoting into a microphone at the top of the stage. Dressed in all black, Mendes offered one of his most solemn televised performances to date -- yet the showcase was far from muted.

“Treat You Better,” the lead single from Illuminate, climbed to No. 6 on the Hot 100 chart, while “Mercy” has peaked at No. 68 in 6 weeks. At the 2015 MTV Europe Music Awards, Mendes won the Best New Act award over competition including Tori Kelly and James Bay.
