Brett Young Talks ACM Awards Win & Wedding Plans on the Red Carpet

Brett Young took some time to chat with Billboard’s Kevan Kenney on the red carpet at the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday (April 15), discussing his ACMs win, a touching story about how his song rekindled a fan’s romance and his upcoming wedding.

Young, who won an early ACM award for new male vocalist of the year, says the honor is “pretty cool,” explaining that he first heard the news from this year’s host, Reba McEntire.

“I first found out like two weeks ago,” he says. “I was out on tour and my tour manager got a phone call and he goes, ‘Hey Brett, it’s for you,’ and he hands it to me and it was Reba McEntire, and she’s the one that first told me that I had won. So it’s the first time I ever spoke to Reba and I’m finding out I won an ACM.” He was later presented with the award by Luke Bryan, adding that “to receive the news from Reba and the award from Luke made it even more special.”

The singer also shared a story about how his song “In Case You Didn’t Know” inspired a fan of his who had split with his girlfriend to fight for her after hearing the song. “I just wanted to thank you for that song because I’m gonna try to get her back,” the fan had told Young. “Fast forward six or eight months, they came to my concert together and they’re engaged.”

In the video interview, which you can watch in full above, you can also see Young and his fiancée Taylor Mills discuss wedding plans, including which music will appear on the playlist.
