Old Dominion Talk Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' & New Music at ACMs: Watch

Old Dominion stopped to catch up with Billboard’s Annie Reuter on the red carpet at the ACM Awards on Sunday (April 7), chatting about how they would define country music and when fans can expect some new music from them.

The band, who are in high spirits after having just found out that they won group of the year, are asked by Billboard what their thoughts are about Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” and whether or not they consider it to be a country song.

“We just listened to it, what, a couple of hours ago? First time,” replies Brad Tursi, while Trevor Rosen notes that he thinks it is country, adding, “What is country these days?”

“I mean we’ve definitely, probably been considered ‘not country’ when we came out,” states Tursi. “So, we’ve been in his shoes. So, just do your thing, buddy.”

Asked how they got past the question of whether or not they are country, Ramsey replies that they don’t really pay attention to that because they know who they are and what kind of music they make.

“You can call it whatever you want,” he says. “But we just want it to be good. We just focus on writing a great song and performing it the best we can. If they want to call it ‘country,’ whatever. If they want to call it ‘not country,’ as long as we have people that want to listen to it, that’s great. And that’s what he’s doing. There’s obviously a lot of people that are listening to his music so he’s winning whether or not people want to decide its country or not.”

In the interview, the band also reveal that they just completed their new record. “Got the masters back last week so we’re just excited to figure out what the heck we’re gonna put out next,” reveals Tursi. “And then the next after that, and next after that.”
