Allman Brothers Band co-founder Gregg Allman underwent liver transplant surgery on Wednesday (June 23), suspending the group's tour plans and forcing it to bow out of Eric Clapton's Crossroads Festival on Saturday near Chicago.
Allmans guitarist Derek Trucks will fill in at Crossroads with his own band, joined by his wife Susan Tedeschi.
The group announced the transplant on Wednesday afternoon, shortly after Allman had the procedure at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. Allman, 62, was diagnosed with Hepatitis C in late 2007 and has been battling the disease ever since. He said in a post-surgery statement that, "I feel pretty good, considering everything that's happened. Everybody involved here, my doctors and nurses in the hospital and all the Allman Brothers fans, they've just all been great...All I can say is 'thanks.'
