Sea Shanty Singer Nathan Evans Takes Fight to Olivia Rodrigo For U.K. Chart Title

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo of Disney's “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil" at El Capitan Theatre on Sept. 30, 2019 in Los Angeles.

There’s action aplenty in the U.K. chart races where Nathan Evans’ sea shanty “Wellerman” (Polydor) takes the challenge to Olivia Rodrigo’s leader “Drivers License” (Interscope) and just 103 units separate the two best-selling albums at the halfway point.

Bicep, the Northern Irish electronic duo of Andrew Ferguson and Matthew McBriar, take top spot on the Official Chart Update with Isles, their second album.

According to the Official Charts Company, Bicep’s latest is the most-downloaded LP over the weekend and the most-streamed new release of the week so far, and should easily eclipse the No. 20 peak of their self-titled debut album from 2017.

The chart crown, however, isn’t guaranteed. Isles has a wafer-thin advantage over Bring Me The Horizon’s Post Human: Survival Horror, which roars back into the midweek chart at No. 2 following its release on physical formats. The Sheffield rockers collection peaked at No. 5 in 2020, following its digital-only release.

The evergreen Neil Diamond just turned 80, and he should earn a late present with a U.K. sales spike. Following a BBC special on the weekend, Diamond’s career retrospective All-Time Greatest Hits (Capitol/UMC) returns to the chart at No. 4, well up on its No. 25 peak from 2015.

Meanwhile, the U.K. singles chart race just heated up with the viral hit “Wellerman” sailing into second spot behind “Drivers License”, the leader for the past two weeks. The Kid Laroi’s “Without You” (RCA) is in third place, an all-time high for the teenage Aussie rapper.

The Official U.K. Singles and Albums Charts are published late Friday, local time.
