Mushroom Group Chairman Michael Gudinski Launches New Label Reclusive Records

Michael Gudinski has a new label.

The Mushroom Group chairman lifts the wraps on Reclusive Records, part of his sprawling, independent music empire.

The first signing is singer and songwriter Scott Darlow, whose new single “You Can’t See Black In The Dark” is an exploration of race relations from his own perspective as an indigenous Australian.

It’s a musical gut-punch, featuring vocals from Ian Kenny, frontman of Karnivool and chart-topping alternative rock outfit Birds of Tokyo.

“You Can’t See Black In The Dark” captures “the journey that I have lived and breathed my entire life,” Darlow explains in a statement.

“I am excited to launch Reclusive Records which I’ve been thinking about for quite a while but was holding off until I found the right artist for the right time,” notes Gudinski.

Mushroom Events entertainment booker Andrew Mackie is A&R director at the boutique label.

With Reclusive, Gudinski continues, “we are focused on career development and being patient with artists. There will be no musical boundaries within the Reclusive label.”

Darlow, a World Vision spokesperson and First Nations activist, has sold more than 50,000 albums prior to joining Reclusive Records.

“I have believed in Scott Darlow for many years,” adds Gudinski, “and it feels incredibly fitting that the first release for Reclusive is Scott’s extremely poignant and timely song ‘You Can’t See Black In The Dark’ which will lead into a very strong EP in the next couple of months.”

Proceeds from streams and downloads of the song will be donated to the Wirrpanda Foundation, launched in 2005 with a mission to improve the quality of life for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

Darlow, says Kenny, “has a truly powerful message and now is a good time for everyone to start listening to a voice like his. Recognize, reform and reconcile are the words I hear.”
