Adam Briggs and Daniel Rankine of A.B Original arrive for the 31st Annual ARIA Awards 2017 at The Star on November 28, 2017 in Sydney, Australia.

The “virtual” APRA Music Awards is taking shape with the announcement of its host, an official streaming partner, and a new date.

The 2020 Awards were scheduled to take place May 26, but have been shifted to May 25 to pay respect to “Sorry Day,” a national day of reflection where all Australians can acknowledge and recognize the historical mistreatment of Aboriginal people, in particular the Stolen Generations.

It's “not an appropriate time for a celebration,” reads a statement from the award’s organizers. “We were moving so quickly to ensure our 2020 APRA Music Awards nominees could have an event to recognize their success over the past year, that we overlooked the very important fact that May 26 is ‘Sorry Day,’” the statement adds.

The hour-long feed will take place at 7:00pm AEST (5am ET), emceed by rapper Briggs and featuring one-off performances curated by musical director Kate Miller-Heidke.

A presenter at last year’s APRA Awards in Melbourne, Briggs is well accustomed to the big stage. As one half of the hip-hop duo A.B. Original, Briggs’ trophy cabinet includes the J Award for album of the year (for Reclaim Australia), a pair of ARIA Awards and a stack of AIR Awards. At the 2018 APRAs, A.B. Original won for songwriter of the year, creating history as the first Indigenous act and the first hip-hop artists to win the big prize.

The 2020 APRAs action starts earlier with a “virtual red carpet,” for which music fans from around the world are invited to dress up in their best rockstar getup and share selfies with customized #VAPRAs red carpet Instagram filters.

The Australasian industry event was slated to take place April 28 at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, but the COVID-19 emergency put an end to those plans.

Established in 1982, the Australasian Performing Right Association's annual songwriters' ceremony is one of the Australian music industry's most treasured events, one which recognizes excellence in songwriting.
