Luke Islam performs on America's Got Talent: The Champions on Jan. 13, 2020.

Luke Islam has a talent and he’s not afraid to use it.

At the tender age of 12, Islam shone on the 14th season of America’s Got Talent. The golden-voiced singer dreams of treading the boards on Broadway, and he took a step closer to it when he performed "She Used To Be Mine" from Waitress, earning a golden buzzer from Julianne Hough. His run came to a halt at the semi-finals of the NBC show, but the fun didn't stop there. Islam made that dream move into Broadway.

Islam returned Monday night (Jan. 13) with more than showbiz glory on his mind. Chatting to the judges at the top of his performance, Islam said he'd tweaked his musical style. He's a mature version of the kid we saw last year.

Brimming with confidence, Islam performed a stirring cover of "Ashes" by Celine Dion and earned a standing ovation from the crowd, judge Heidi Klum included.

Simon Cowell, however, had a problem with the choice of song. “It’s not to say I don’t like you, I just didn’t like the song. I don’t think it enabled you to showcase that big range of yours," he explained, as a chorus of boos echoed around the room.

“But, here’s the good news,” the Brit continued. “The audience reaction was mental. I think you’ve got a shot at making it through to the finals.” Luke, he warned, you’ve got to step up. “You are better than that.”

Klum had a different take. "This is absolutely mind-blowing to me, that you can sing like that.”
