Silversun Pickups' video for "Don't Know Yet," premiering exclusively below from the group's Widow's Weeds album, marks a bit of a sea change for the Los Angeles quartet.

For starters it's a performance video -- not in concert but in a residential setting -- which frontman Brian Aubert tells Billboard the band usually avoids. It also welcomes a new director into the fold, Alan Del Rio Ortiz, after working mostly with good friend Suzie Vlcek on other videos. "We love her," Aubert says, "but when it came time to do this (video) we reached out to a bunch of people, which we haven’t done in a long time -- years, really. The landscape has changed; There's been a whole slew of new young filmmakers that have different access to things and are really good at it." Ortiz, according to Aubert, sold the band with a series of black and white demo photos that illustrated how he wanted to approach the video -- including Silversun Pickups' performance in it.

"At that point we honestly thought, 'Who cares what we want,'" Aubert recalls. "We thought that his (idea) seems to feel really right with the song. We couldn't figure out how the song necessarily worked in some more clever, narrative thing. We just realized, I think, it's time we have something very, very fundamental, like a really well-shot performance video. We felt like maybe people want to see us in this one. It's a hard thing to get us to want to do. We never think about having to see us; We're like, 'How boring...' But for this one it seemed correct."

Widow's Weeds, Silversun Pickup's fifth album, came out in June and debuted at No. 2 on the Independent Albums chart. It found the group working with Butch Vig after two previous albums with Jacknife Lee, which Aubert says was a stellar experience.

"He's the best," Aubert notes. "He's such a lovely human being. We always knew it was gonna be great. We knew that sonically he's amazing. The thing that's scary about working with somebody who's really done a lot like he has is you hope they don't go, 'Let's put you in this machine that works, 'cause I've got it all figured out.' But Butch has an insane wanderlust and he's always looking for new things to do and try. And he really approached making a record from a band perspective; Garbage was doing stuff while we were in making our record and we could see what a democracy it is and how (Vig) understands the dynamics and how to work with a band and the separate people in it."

Silversun Pickups wraps up a short west coast tour -- including some radio holiday shows -- on Dec. 18 in Phoenix.
