Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes, the production masterminds behind Pnau and Empire of the Sun, are transferring some of their considerable talents to the labels business.
The Sydney pair have launched Lab78 through a partnership with etcetc, the label home for Pnau since 2006.
First up is Vlossom, a collaborative project with Cloud Control frontman Alister Wright, whose debut single “Catch Your Breath” can be streamed below. Lab78 is “brimming with activity for the new year,” Littlemore tells Billboard.
“We have the Vlossom EP first up co-written with Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie's Blackstar) and Henry Hey (George Michael). We will also be introducing another artist into the world, Ivy, coming with an amazing EP; a sound all her own with strong notes of Cocteau Twins and Mazzy Starr.”
Hailing from Louisiana, Ivy has a “voice like no other,” Littlemore continues. The ARIA Award winning electronic music veteran discovered the artist through YouTube, where she’s amassed an impressive following. “Her noir aesthetic and stunning beauty combined with her voice and guitar playing set the scene for a very special EP,” he notes.
etcetc is involved in A&R and fulfilling the visual creative directed by Littlemore, and the dance and electronic specialist will supply label and project management services. Lab78 will also have access to its in-house marketing, radio and PR team and any necessary third-party services, licensing, and label business operations including finance, royalties and legal, explains etcetc GM Aden Mullens.
“We’re collectively really excited about the venture,” Mullens explains. “Nick and Peter are hyper-creative individuals who work with so many talented people and they just need an outlet and a trusted team to help get these projects out.”
Littlemore and Mayes have been musically fused at the hip since they were teenagers. This year marks the 20th anniversary of their first, full-length Pnau album release Sambanova. Now a trio (Littlemore’s brother and longtime collaborator Sam officially became joined the lineup in 2017), the group’s most recent album Changa yielded the multi-platinum hits “Go Bang” and “Chameleon.” Their most recent single, the funky “Solid Gold” is nominated for best video at next week’s ARIA Awards.
The release slate for Lab78, which takes its name from the year Littlemore and Mayes were born, is bulging.
“We also have coming the return of Teenager, my band from a while back with Ladyhawke,” Littlemore adds. “Its sophomore release will feature some new comers including Latashá, an amazingly versatile rapper come punk art star and collaborations with Donnie Sloan and Pnau’s engine room Sam and Peter. Lots more things also in the works.”
