Compounding Pharmacies: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Method Man, Michael Bolton and RuPaul might not seem linked on first glance, but all of their names have been used as fictional patients on New England Compounding Center (NECC) prescriptions. On the latest episode of HBO's Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, the host brought the “glorious, random group of people” together for his segment on compounding pharmacies.

Compounding pharmacies are facilities that make medicine tailored to fit patients’ specific needs -- but the lack of oversight and “many, many people dying,” according to Oliver, are pretty alarming. So the artists -- alongside Jimmy Kimmel, David Schwimmer, Kiefer Sutherland and Kristen Bell -- brought the issue to viewers’ attention by speaking about the dangers of these pharmacies in relation to their onscreen personas.

“Please don’t use our names in your bullshit prescriptions,” Method Man requests.

“Our names don’t belong on your fraudulent spinal medication,” the RuPaul’s Drag Race host declares.

“Mine belongs on a platinum album,” says the Wu-Tang Clan rapper.

Later, Bolton cracks a joke corresponding to one made earlier in the segment about parrots needing medicine with a preferred piña colada flavor specially made at these compounding pharmacies. “My bird needs them too,” he says with a parrot perched on his finger, to Schwimmer’s confusion. “I love parrots! Do people not realize that ‘How Am I Supposed to Live Without You’ is about a lady parrot? I loved that parrot,” the pop rock artist quips about his 1990 No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit.
