Prince is tough to follow, impossible to emulate. America’s Got Talent contestant Mackenzie gave it a good shot.

On Tuesday night’s edition, the Los Angeles hopeful auditioned with the Purple One’s classic "Nothing Compares 2 U," made famous in the early 1990s by Sinead O’Connor.

Accompanied on electric piano, Mackenzie showcased his creamy vocals and impressive range in a performance that stayed much closer to Prince's original cut.

Like the late, great artist, Mackenzie earned a standing ovation. And he made at least one of the judges cry.

Mackenzie knows the material better than most. He's the lead singer for Prince's former band, the New Power Generation. Mack's first performance as an official member of the group was in Australia in March 2018, with dates in Sydney, Melbourne and at Byron Bay Bluesfest.

For his AGT appearance, he was joined on stage with Morris Hayes, Prince's long-time musical director and keyboard player.
