Carmen Carter auditions for "America's Got Talent"

55-year-old Carmen Carter is ready to step out from the background and into the spotlight.

The former background singer took the stage on America's Got Talent's recent episode to audition for a place in the competition. When asked why it took so long for her to pursue her dreams, she explained that a record executive told her that she's "wonderful but too fat," and she "just went into the background after that."

The songstress then delved into a powerful, heartwrenching performance of INXS' hit song, "Never Tear Us Apart," which was met by a standing ovation by the audience and all four judges.

"There has never been a person who has ever bought a record they loved based on how old or how big the artist is," Simon Cowell told Carter. "You didn’t come out here as a victim. You came out here to prove a point, and 4,000 people gave you a standing ovation."

The judges then unanimously sent Carter into the next round. Watch her audition below, and catch AGT on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
