Myspace Lost Every Song Uploaded By Artists Between 2003 and 2015
Myspace has lost all music uploaded to the site between 2003 and 2015, the social network confirmed on Monday (March 18).
The massive data loss includes approximately 50 million songs by 14 million artists, as well as all users’ media from the first 12 years of the site's existence. The erasure apparently occurred during a server migration and none of the songs or other files can be recovered.
“As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago may no longer be available on or from Myspace,” the site said in a statement released via Boing Boing. “We apologize for the inconvenience and suggest that you retain your backup copies.”
It appears the loss occurred at least eight months ago, when artists began realizing their older music was no longer playable on the site. When contacted by artists for help, Myspace originally said it was looking into the issue before eventually admitting, “There is no way to recover them.”
