Albums by Courtney Barnett, Dead Can Dance, DZ Deathrays, Gurrumul, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, The Presets, Troye Sivan and many more are in the hunt for the Australian Music Prize, the longlist for which was published Thursday.

The prestigious annual honor is modeled on Britain's Mercury Music Prize and Canada's Polaris Prize and is decided by a music industry panel, whose chief goal is to identify and reward the outstanding creative Australian album of the past year.

AMP judges assembled a list of 85 nominated albums from across the musical spectrum, including chart-toppers (Amy Shark’s Love Monster, Troye Sivan’s Bloom and Gurrumul’s Djarimirri), though to rising international stars (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s Gumboot Soup, Confidence Man’s Confident Music for Confident People), veterans (Dead Can Dance’s DionysusKasey Chambers & The Fireside DisciplesCampfire) and new gems (Shepparton Airplane’s Almurta, Padma Newsome’s The Vanity of Trees).

"This year the quantity of Australian albums has really increased, but along with that, so has the quality," comments AMP judge and Hoodoo Gurus frontman Dave Faulkner. "The judges have been blown away by the number of albums that we’ve discovered for ourselves as part of this process. The reality that the Australian Music Prize can be a recognition of the winner, but also a platform for music-lovers everywhere to discover new records without the shackles of genre and format is so exciting."

In an age of streaming, notes AMP judge and radio presenter Caitlin Nienaber, “we’re seeing a renaissance of the album as artists redefine what it can be. The LP record taught us that an album was two 20-minute sides, then the CD told us an album was 70 minutes. Today fans may have been liberated in a world of pick-and-choose tracks, but artists can also create with a blank canvas when working on bringing an album into the world."

The award, now in its fourteenth year, has been won in the past by the likes of A.B.Original, Courtney Barnett, The Jezabels and Eddie Current Suppression Ring. The 2018 shortlist of nine releases will be revealed in early 2019 ahead of the winner’s announcement in March. The winner will receive a A$30,000 ($25,000) check donated by the PPCA collecting society.
