R. Kelly's Ex-Wife Details Alleged Abuse: 'I Thought I Was Gonna Die'
Andrea Kelly, R. Kelly's ex-wife, has come forward with more details about her abuse allegations against the singer, detailing moments in which she claims she feared for her life.
The dancer/choreographer was married to Kelly for 13 years, from 1996-2009, and is the mother of his three children.
In June, she broke her silence about the domestic violence she allegedly faced throughout their marriage and said it had led her to contemplate suicide. This week, she sat down for an emotional interview on The View and admitted she thought Kelly was going to kill her.
"One time he attacked me in the back of a Hummer, and I do suffer from PTSD because of it ... I thought I was gonna die in the back of the Hummer," Andrea Kelly said on the show.
She continued: "He'd taken this left arm and pulled it behind me, and his weight was on my body, but he didn't realize his forearm was on my neck. So as he's pressing down, my breathing is getting labored. The only reason why I think I made it out is 'cause I said, 'Robert, you're gonna kill me. I can't breathe. You have to get your arm off of my neck.' I just remember sitting in the back of the Hummer and it got blue. I just thought, 'Oh my god. I'm gonna die in the back of this Hummer, and he's gonna drive off with my body in the backseat and nobody's gonna know.'"
Another time, she said, the two were having an argument and "he took both of my arms behind me, tied them and then attached my legs to my arms. He hogtied me and left me on the side of the bed and actually fell asleep."
Asked why she's choosing to share her story now, after being divorced for many years, Kelly responded, "It's about saving lives."
"You cannot not speak when someone's life and what they've been through is parallel to yours," she said.
The View says R. Kelly's management team had no comment about his ex-wife's allegations.
In 2017, Buzzfeed first reported that the singer has kept a group of young women in his home in what has been called an abusive "sex cult" for several years, manipulating them and controlling every aspect of their lives. He has denied allegations of misconduct.
