Along with thousands of viewers, Louis Tomlinson watched in shock as contestant Tommy Ludford fell off of the stage during his X Factor U.K. performance on Sept. 30.

The 20-year-old singer was so absorbed in his acoustic performance of his original song “Dipping Biscuits” (for the show’s Six Chair Challenge) that he failed to realize just how close he was to the stage edge.

Ludford plunged backward off of the stage with his guitar, stunning the show’s four judges and the live audience.

Tomlinson, Ludford’s mentor, raced over to check on the singer, along with X Factor host Dermot O’Leary.

After a few moments, Ludford pumped his fist in the air, smiling and declaring he was alright. Ludford was met with encouraging applause from the relieved audience and judges, leaving many to wonder whether or not he will make it to the next round of the competition.
