Esperanza Spalding Announces New Project '12 Little Spells'
Four-time Grammy award-winning artist Esperanza Spalding has announced a new project titled 12 Little Spells today (Sept. 25).
The announcement comes only a year after her album Exposure, which Spalding composed entirely from scratch in just 77 hours during a live stream. The jazz singer created these new spells while at a castle in Italy last month, and finished recording them in Brooklyn on Monday, according to a press release.
Within this new creation, Spalding explores the body, human energy and healing. She collaborated with visual artist Carmen Daneshmandi, theater director Elkhanah Pulitzer, wardrobe specialist Diego Montoya, and video artist Ethan Samuel Young to ensure her vision was brought to life in a all creative realms.
She will release one new spell per day on her website beginning Oct. 7 until all 12 have been released. Each piece correlates to a specific energy or body part and will be presented with song-specific imagery and short films. Finally, an EP will be released on Oct. 19 on all digital streaming outlets.
To follow along the theme of 12, Esperanza will also reveal her series of 12 pop-up shows within the coming days. Each show will be unique and focus on a single spell, featuring an explosion of music and words, color and movement.
