Democratic New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon listens during a gubernatorial debate with New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York on Aug. 29, 2018.

Cynthia Nixon is running for New York governor, challenging Andrew Cuomo, who has held the position for the past 17 years.

One aspect of the former Sex and The City star's campaign that is garnering attention is the legalization of marijuana. However, Nixon notes that the weed debate is less about the drug itself and more a racial justice issue, as she explained at a recent debate, “People across all ethnic-racial lines use marijuana at roughly the same rates but the arrests for marijuana are 80 percent black and Latino. We need to not only legalize marijuana here but when this multi-billion dollar industry comes to New York we need to prioritize the individuals and the communities that have been most harmed by the war on drugs.”

Rapper and activist T.I. was particularly inspired by the message, taking to Twitter to invite Nixon to his next family party. "I have no idea who this brilliant lady is," he wrote, "But she’s invited to my next bbq/family gathering and if she’s running for anything...ANYTHING I SAY..She’s got my vote!!! Right on to the Righteous Decent White People out there, using their privilege to make a difference!!!"

See below. Elections for the Democratic candidate for governor will take place on Thursday (Sept. 13).
