The First Trailer for M.I.A. Documentary Has Been Released: Watch

David Wolff - Patrick/Redferns
M.I.A. performs at Grande Halle de La Villette on Oct. 29, 2016 in Paris.

A documentary on the life and career of M.I.A. is hitting theaters on September 28, and the first trailer is absolutely chilling. MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A. premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival, and won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award.

The songstress, who raised controversy as she "lived through a war, came as a refugee that is now a pop star," talks about leaving Sri Lanka's gruesome civil war to seek safety in Britain. Scenes of her family, concerts and music videos flash on the screen as M.I.A. declares, "If you've got access to a microphone, please use it to say something."
