President Trump Reportedly Sent Korean Dictator Kim Jong-Un a Signed 'Rocket Man' CD
Pres. Trump has a well-established reputation for bestowing cutting nicknames on his political and personal enemies. According to the South Korean media outlet The Chosun Ilbo, when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo left for North Korea on Thursday (July 5) for the latest round of denuclearization talks, Trump brought along two gifts, including one that seemingly flipped the script on a cutting insult Trump has repeatedly launched at North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un.
In addition to a personal letter from Trump, the package reportedly included a CD featuring a recording of Elton John's 1972 hit "Rocket Man," whose title the president has used a number of times in speeches and on Twitter as a belittling swipe at the North Korean leader. Sources in Washington told the site that the gifts reflect "Trump's expectations that Kim will follow through on the pledges in an agreement the two signed at their summit."
Trump and Kim met last month in what the the president deemed a wild success, assuring the nation that "there is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea," even as a number of pundits labeled the summit a diplomatic disaster after Trump promised to cease joint military exercises with South Korea while Kim pledged to give up his nuclear weapons program, which he appears not to have done so far.
A diplomatic source reportedly told Chosun that the "Rocket Man" CD was a "subject of discussion during Trump's lunch with Kim. Kim mentioned that Trump referred to him as 'rocket man' when tensions ran high last year" after a series of nuclear tests and missile launches by the North. "Trump then asked Kim if he knew the song and Kim said no." Trump reportedly recalled the conversation and told Pompeo to take the signed CD along as a gift for Kim; a White House spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time and NBC News reported that Pompeo would not confirm for reporters whether or not he brought the CD.
Pompeo arrived in Pyongyang on Friday (July 6) for a two-day visit.
