Get to Know 'Boo'd Up' Singer-Songwriter Ella Mai: Watch

In the latest episode of “You Should Know,” Billboard sits down with British singer-songwriter Ella Mai to find out more about her.

Mai explains that she was born and raised in South London, but she moved to New York (Jamaica, Queens to be exact) when she was 12. Her very first performance was when she was “really little,” since she attended performing arts school, when she played Anita in her favorite musical West Side Story.

Mai also reveals that the first time she was ever starstruck was when she saw Beyoncé, adding that while she didn’t actually speak with Queen Bey, she was in awe when she walked into the room.

The musician shares that the latest show she binge-watched was Insecure, her biggest guilty pleasure is a chocolate mint bar and that she would love to one day collaborate with Lauryn Hill.

Mai also divulges that her biggest accomplishment to date was when her song “Boo’d Up” broke the Billboard Hot 100 top 10, coming in at No. 6. “To find out my song made the top 10 was honestly a dream come true,” she says. “I think it's something that I've dreamed about, and anyone dreams about, their whole life. So, to actually see it and read it [has] been incredible. I still have to pinch myself to know that this is actually happening.”
