Tamara de Lempicka’s 120th Birthday

Today’s Google Doodle (May 16) celebrates the 120th birthday of esteemed Polish painter Tamara de Lempicka, whose personal portraits came to define the Roaring Twenties. Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1898, Lempicka fell in love with the arts after spending a summer with her grandmother in Italy where she was exposed to Italian Renaissance painters.

When her parents divorced, Lempicka got married and moved to Paris at the height of post-Cubism, where she began training as an artist. Blending cubist styles with late neoclassical, Lempicka’s portraits became a hot commodity among aristocrats in the twenties. She died in 1980 at the age of 81.

Happy Birthday, Lempicka!
