The Academic Tries on Multiple Hats in 'Different' Video: Exclusive Premiere
The video for the rockers' latest single from 'Tales from the Backseat' finds them looking for the perfect fit visually.
What would a music video shoot look like if it was carried out in some sort of Black Mirror-esque scenario?
That's the question the new video for "Different," the latest single from young Irish rockers The Academic, sets out to answer. The brand-new clip is being premiered today (April 26) exclusively via Billboard.
With "Different," the four men of The Academic -- Craig Fitzgerald, Dean Gavin, Matt Murtagh and Stephen Murtagh -- find themselves in Los Angeles dressed, at first, in nothing but white robes. Three scientists explain that they're about to enter an "imaging field" that will select the so-called perfect visual for their new video.
What ensues is a trip through multiple motifs and styles that the band tries on for size, from country-western getups to pop-punk-esque outfits -- before, naturally, settling on the image they were meant to portray (well, at least, according to the computer program).
Though it features the four-piece in multiple looks and outfits, the Jason Lester-directed clip is nonetheless an intriguing up-close look at a band still introducing itself to American audiences alongside its international fans.
"Different" is the current single off Tales from the Backseat, The Academic's debut full-length, released Jan. 12 via Downtown Records. The band's previous video for "Bear Claws" recently won a pair of Webby Awards for while using Facebook Live's audio/video time lag to create a live-looping clip.
Following a gig opening for The Rolling Stones at Croke Park in Ireland on May 17, The Academic will return to the U.S. for a brief string of dates opening for The Kooks, kicking off May 22 at New York's Terminal 5 and concluding May 30 at the Vic Theatre in Chicago.
