YouTube beauty influencers, step aside. John Mayer is here to finally share the secret on how to achieving the perfect smokey eye. And as any makeup enthusiast knows well, a smokey eye is no easy task.

The “Love on the Weekend” crooner posted a series of videos on his Instagram story Sunday night (April 22), excited to finally make use of a Chanel eyeshadow palette he owns. He explained that he is doing a color study for an unexplained project, and was particularly drawn to the luxury brand’s makeup because “I really like Chanel colors.”

Mayer, who completely rejected the notion of blending brushes, insisted that the only ones needed to achieve that sultry dark look are the little foam sponge applicators that come with makeup palettes. The tutorial then begins with a proper base shade: copper. He shared that a tenderness in application is key.

“This is where guys get it wrong, they go too heavy. Notice how I’m already impressing you with my light touch.”

He then went in with the dark grey shade of the palette, stressing the importance of accentuating “the roundness of your eyes.” He finished off the look with a tan color in the center of the eyelid.

As any beauty vlogger does when finishing such an intricate look, Mayer naturally took a minute to admire himself in the selfie camera. “Oh I’m sorry did somebody nail it?” he gushed, before getting inspirational. “No they didn’t. They came close and that’s what matters. That’s the only thing this was all about, was giving it your all and being glorious.”

Mayer concludes his tutorial by asking followers to direct message him with thoughts, before confidently posting a “makeup free selfie” and going to bed. Watch the hilarious video below.
