Google Doodle Celebrates Omar Sharif’s 86th Birthday
The actor was best known for his portrayal of Sherif Ari in 'Lawrence of Arabia.'
Today’s Google Doodle (April 10) celebrates the late Omar Sharif’s birthday. The actor, who passed away in 2015, would have turned 86 this year.
Born Michel Demitri Shalhoub in Alexandria, Egypt, Sharif worked as a lumberer for his father before pursuing acting. His first film appearance was in 1954’s Struggle In The Valley in which he co-stared alongside his future wife Faten Hamama.
Sharif’s breakout performance came in 1962, when he played Sherif Ali in Lawrence of Arabia, which helped him become an international heartthrob. The actor nabbed two Golden Globes and an Oscar nomination for his performance in Lawrence of Arabia, winning his third Golden Globe three years later for the biggest role of his career in Doctor Zhivago.
In May of 2015 it was announced that Sharif was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He died of a heart attack in July of that same year. Today’s Google Doodle shows an animation of the handsome Sharif in his purest form.
