Just last month, Amazon swung into Australia for the first time with its streaming platform, Amazon Music Unlimited.

To celebrate the launch, the retail giant on Friday shares “Made In Australia,” an Amazon Original playlist of newly-recorded covers of classic by local artists, from Gang of Youths to Betty Who, Bad Dreems, The Rubens and The Temper Trap, whose take on The Triffids' legendary ‘80s number "Wide Open Road" is premiered today by Billboard.

Dougy Mandagi and Co. wrap “Wide Open Road” inside a swirling, dreamy wall of sound, the result of which can be heard below.

“Wide Open Road” is regarded as a stone-cold classic in these parts. When APRA published its Top 30 Australian songs in 2001 to commemorate the society’s 75th anniversary, "Wide Open Road" made the cut. Its 1986 parent album Born Sandy Devotional came in at No. 5 in the 2010 tome The 100 Best Australian Albums, which described the recording as a “road trip from innocence to experience.” Formed in Perth, The Triffids were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2008.

The Temper Trap were just the right band for the difficult task of covering a classic. Powered by Mandagi’s trademark falsetto the Melbourne outfit had a global hit with 2008’s "Sweet Disposition,” lifted from their debut Conditions. They've hit the summit of the ARIA Album Chart on two occasions, with their sophomore self-titled album from 2012 and 2016’s Thick As Thieves

"We've always been big fans of The Triffids. Born Sandy Devotional found it's way onto the stereo in the Tarago a lot in the early years of the band touring," says Mandagi in an email to Billboard. "We covered 'Wide Open Road back' then a couple of times too. When the opportunity to be part of this Amazon playlist came about we were excited to revive the cover but when we got into the studio we couldn't remember how our version went so we came up with something new in the moment and took it in a different direction."
