Japanese skaters Kana Muramoto and Chris Reed put on a smooth show as they performed their free dance routine to Ryuichi Sakamoto’s “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence” during the Winter Olympics.
The pair failed to medal but won fans as they went out to the instrumental title track to the 1983 film, which starred Sakamoto and David Bowie.
Sakamoto, who has battled with throat cancer, recently spoke with The Guardian about his “great regret” of failing to reconnect with Bowie when they were both living in downtown New York.
Sakamoto’s forthcoming album, Glass with Alva Noto, is scheduled for release on Feb. 16. The experimental artist last year released Async, his first solo effort in seven years.
