Billboard Bits: Soul Train, Beatles, Gene Simmons

News on Soul Train anniversary event with Destiny's Child and Smokey Robinson, Gene Simmons TV show, and The Beatles.U

Smokey Robinson and Destiny's Child have been confirmed to perform at the Soul Train 30th Anniversary Gala, to be held Wednesday (Jan. 24) at the House Of Blues in Las Vegas. The performances, as well as a "celebrity Soul Train line dance segment," will be taped for likely use during an anniversary TV special to air in June.

On Feb. 28 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Destiny's Child will receive the Sammy Davis Jr. Award for "entertainer of the year" as part of the 15th annual Soul Train Music Awards. The event will not be aired live but will run in syndication on various outlets afterward.

The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour Bus is the top prize in a series of giveaways marking the Hard Rock Cafe's 30th anniversary. The international music-themed restaurant chain calls the bus "its largest and most prized piece of music memorabilia."

Ten finalists chosen through sweepstakes entries collected beginning Feb. 1 at Hard Rock restaurants and the company's Web site will attend the Hard Rock Cafe's June 14 anniversary party in London. One grand prize winner will take home the bus.

Kiss founder/bassist Gene Simmons will host a one-hour Court TV documentary about the ugly side of the music industry. "The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll" will air June 11 on the cable network.

"There are unscrupulous types who affect the music business and affect how and where you hear music and it's important to shed light on that because, just like at home, you shine a flashlight, the cockroaches go scurrying," Simmons said recently.

"It's a very, very shady business and you have to have a strong backbone to survive and to come out clean. Along the way, this special will talk a little more about that."
