Get to Know Venezuelan-Born Sibling Duo Mau y Ricky

Latin pop duo Mau y Ricky are no strangers to the music world, having grown up with iconic singer-songwriter Ricardo Montaner as their father. But now that they are establishing a music career of their own, Billboard caught up with the siblings to find out more about them, as part of the “You Should Know” video series.

The pair explain that they grew up in Caracas, Venezuela and then moved to Miami, Florida when Mau was seven years old and Ricky was 10.

“We were inspired to pursue music, probably, by our father in an early age,” says Ricky, “because we saw the love that people had for him and the love that he had for the art.” Mau continues that he and his brother started making music together when he was 12, and reveals that the first song they wrote as a pair was called “Sinking Deeper,” adding that the song will “never come out.”

Ricky shares that the first place he ever performed music at was at a venue in Caracas with his father. “I was seven years old, and I had to open his shows playing piano and presenting him, and I remember that I did that for an entire tour, and I got paid $100 in total.”

When asked which song of theirs would be a good introduction for new listeners, Ricky suggests their collaboration with Karol G, “Mi Mala,” which he describes as “sexy.”
