Fifteen-year-old U.S. singer Billie Eilish and hotly-tipped eight-piece Superorganism are among the 16 acts that have picked for the BBC Music Sound of 2018 poll, voted for by around 170 industry experts, DJs, festival bookers, critics and former winners.

LA-based Eilish, who is signed to Interscope, is the youngest ever nominee for the annual poll, which started in 2003 and has previously been awarded to Adele, Sam Smith, Haim, Ellie Goulding and 50 Cent.

Also on the 2018 longlist is Sony-signed US R&B singer Khalid and Manchester-based goth indie four-piece Pale Waves, who have been heavily championed by their Dirty Hit label mates The 1975.

Other nominees include Scandinavian pop acts Sigrid and Alma, London rapper Not3s, Manchester-based R&B singer IAMDDB and Rex Orange County, aka 19 year-old British singer-songwriter Alex O’Connor, who guested on Tyler the Creator’s Flower Boy album.

Twenty-one-year-old British rapper Yxng Bane and London-based buzz band Superorganism (signed to U.K. indie Domino) also make the globe-spanning longlist. Criteria for selection precludes any act who has been the lead artist on a U.K. top 10 single or album released before Oct 26 2017 -- or someone who is already widely known by the British public, such as a member of an established band or TV talent show winner.

A daily countdown of the top 5 will be broadcast on BBC Radio 1 from Monday 8 January, with the winner due to be announced on Friday 12 January.

"The BBC Music Sound of 2018 longlist is impressive for its strength and diversity," said Chris Price, Head of Music for Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra, in a statement.

Price went on to say that the "stellar list of new acts here, many of whom have seen significant early support from Radio 1 and 1Xtra, fill me with confidence that 2018 will be an exciting year for emerging talent."

"Countless numbers of talented artists have featured on previous Sound Of lists and I’m delighted by the level of talent presented again this year," added Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac. "I can’t wait to be a part of their journey and see what the year ahead has in store for them all."
