It’s been almost two years since Lee DeWyze released his last album, 2016’s Oil & Water.  His follow-up to that set, tentatively titled Paranoia, arrives Feb. 16 on Shanachie Entertainment.

Fans got the first hint of what the new album will sound like with first single “The Breakdown.” Below, Billboard premieres the trippy lyric video for the moody, atmospheric track about a relationship that isn’t what it seems. The idea came to DeWyze one day when he was at home with his guitar and evolved into the tale of a souring partnership.

The Season 9 American Idol winner has had a busy year, including playing more than 100 shows and opening for a number of acts, including Lady Antebellum. He also signed a publishing deal with Songs, home to such singer/songwriters as The Weeknd, Diplo and Lorde. DeWyze has seen tremendous success licensing more than 35 songs in films and TV shows, including “Blackbird Song” in The Walking Dead and “Weight” in Elementary.

DeWyze says the new album, which takes its name from a track on the set, is about capturing emotions, while challenging himself to continue growing as an artist and songwriter. “For me, making this album was all about exploring what felt right for each song in that moment,” he tells Billboard. “It's a combination of storytelling and emotion meets music. I never want to get bored with what I'm doing in the studio, but this was a way for me to keep things me, while stepping outside of myself to create something new. I produced this record with Nico Grossfeld, who I have been working with for quite some time. I believe it's very important that those working with you fully understand you musically, and he does. So it makes for a very good combination. I wrote all the songs on Paranoia, with each song coming from a different headspace while keeping them all cohesive. I'm just excited for everyone to hear what I've been doing in the studio."

DeWyze will promote the upcoming album with a brief West Coast tour kicking off Friday at Los Angeles’ Peppermint Lounge.
