Country superstar Garth Brooks leads a list of performers for tomorrow night's (March 22) tribute to singer/songwriter Johnny Russell at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville. Roy Clark, Vince Gill, Loretta Lynn, Ricky Skaggs, and the Oak Ridge Boys also are scheduled to appear. "Johnny inducted me into the Opry 11 years ago, and that's still the highest honor I've received in this business," Brooks said in a statement. "I love him, I'm a fan, and if this show can help him get better, I'm all for it." Ticket proceeds will help pay for Russell's medical expenses. He has received dialysis treatments for over five years. Although he's a patient at Baptist Hospital, he plans to attend the show. Russell, who scored his first top-20 hit with "Catfish John" (peaking at No. 12 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart in December 1973), joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1985. His songwriting credits include "Making Plans," recorded by Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner, and George Strait's "Lets Fall to Pieces Together." Copyright 2001 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
