Nick Jonas decided to celebrate the release of his relatively understated new single “Find You” with an intimate performance The Peppermint Club in Los Angeles, Calif. on Thursday night (Sept. 14).

Taking the stage for a brief five-song set, the 24-year-old emerged with a full backing band -- a keyboardist, bassist, guitarist, drummer and two singers -- for a 30-minute whirlwind that blew through some of his biggest hits and a look forward with his latest.

“Thank you all for coming out it’s an exciting day, it’s an exciting night,” said Jonas, who flew in from Montreal that morning and dressed casually in an opened camouflage buttondown over a white tee and a wide-brimmed hat. “It’s one of those things where you spend so much time writing a song, making a body of work, and what you do in the creative process is all about trying to be as honest as you can be. I had a few people who really helped me get to that place so I’ve got to shout out my manager Phil McIntyre, always helping me get to a place where I’m honest and telling my stories in a way that hopefully connects with all of you. And the second piece to it is you guys, the fans, elevating me to a place where years into this journey solo now, I feel like I could still take that step and take big risks, so thank you to all of you.”

After a false start with “Chains,” a song “about self-discovery as much as it is about the desire to find love,” Jonas dipped a toe into funk with single “Levels,” a standalone single between his 2014 sophomore album Nick Jonas and 2016’s Last Year Was Complicated. He didn’t waste time settling into “Find You,” strapping on an electric guitar and telling a story of how the song came to be after he smoked weed at Coachella and, after dancing in a tent for four hours, mined inspiration from the experience at the studio with songwriter Simon Wilcox the following week. Though he was hesitant to give the audience an album release date, he told the room that the video for “Find You” will arrive on Monday.

“I’m so happy that’s out!” he said, teasing the audience with a Tove Lo guest appearance that never materialized for a rendition of “Close.” “There’s more music coming, stuff I’m really proud of and excited for you to hear.” The evening ended with “Jealous,” his breakthrough solo single, before patrons filed out, gift bags in hand and a taste of the next Jonas era.
