Joseph talked to Billboard about the inception of his “Reclaiming My Time” track, love from the Ru girls and his upcoming projects.
What inspired you to turn Maxine Waters' takedown into a house track?
I've made several songs out of vocal clips in the past. One of my friends showed me this mock album cover art for Maxine Waters’ "Reclaiming My Time" and requested that I actually make a song out of the audio. After watching the footage, I knew it would make for a great vocal on a house track. I produced the song in a few hours and put it up on my SoundCloud immediately.
The Chicago-based drag performer Aunty Cherry Chan -- who I did not know until she wrote me a message on Facebook -- asked if I minded if she made a lip sync video to the song. I was happy to send her the track.
They played the track on CNN. What was it like seeing that?
I happened to be visiting my mom at the time, so she thought it was pretty cool as we watched it together. She wouldn't stop bragging to all of her friends. It was pretty exciting and validating for me to hear that legendary CNN voice talk about my song -- a very “is this really happening?" moment for sure.
This isn't the first time you've seen viral attention: You mixed a track called "Linda Evangelista" with Drag Race's Aja's now-infamous hissy fit over the judges' love for Valentina. Have you heard from either of them?
I DJed a party in San Francisco with Aja as the guest performer and got to see her lip sync my song. Laganja Estranja posted her lip sync video of the song the same day it came out and Alaska tweeted about the song early on. I've seen lots of videos of different queens from all over the world performing to the song.
I am the bandleader and music supervisor for a YouTube talk show called Hey Qween with Jonny McGovern, and we have had most of the RuPaul's Drag Race contestants on for interviews, so I've met a lot of them. The infamous Valentina reached out to me on Instagram with a direct message that said, “I have to thank you.” I'm still waiting for a reply to my response. [Laughs]
The coolest thing that happened was that RuPaul reached out to me and shared the song multiple times on social media. He ended up giving me a shout-out and played it on the Reunited episode of this season.
I'm about to release a new original song called "Thirsty" that I'm singing on and my longtime friend, season 9 runner-up Peppermint, is featured on the track.
