Mobley's 'Tell Me' Video Arrives With a Twist: Premiere

Ashley Park

With the release of his Some Other Country EP back in 2016, Austin-based singer-songwriter Mobley introduced himself as a maker of boundary-pushing pop that urges listeners to throw all assumptions to the wayside -- whether they be on definition of pop music, race or what it means to be American. The singer's latest release, the music video for his infectious single "Tell Me," checks the box on all three.

Set in a suburban neighborhood, the visual follows the intertwining lives of a woman leisurely making coffee in her home and a black man wielding a baseball bat on the sidewalk outside. We won't spoil the ending, but it goes without saying that everything is not what it seems in the twisty storyline.

"In the video, our lovely starlet’s blissful domesticity is in no small part predicated on the fact that her position in the social order enables her to displace people and things that she finds displeasurable, with little thought to the fallout for other people," Mobley tells Billboard. "I wanted to first turn the camera toward that aspirational bourgeois obliviousness, and then to the people who get displaced and dispossessed to maintain it, even if their only real offense is existing."

The catchy track, in which Mobley pleads the listener to "tell me what you want me to be," is part of a series of love songs the artist is using to explore his relationship with America, particularly as a black man.

We're not the only ones taking notice of the rising Texan talent -- he's shared the stage with stars like Phantogram and Wavves and performed as a one-man-band at SXSW and CMJ Music Marathon, among other festivals. In fact, Mobley's new video release comes on the heels of his summer tour, which he'll wrap in October with a performance at Austin City Limits Music Festival.
