I hope everybody listens to it in the right spirit. I mean I wrote the so ngs right out of my gut."
The as-yet-untitled album is being produced by veteran Nashville artist Marty Stuart, and will be issued by Lost Highway. A spokesperson for the label says the recording process is ongoing, although has halted for the time being as Thornton is working on a film. A specific release date has not yet been determined, although Thornton plans to tour in support of the set.
Thornton, who directed and starred in 1996's "Sling Blade" and won an Oscar for writing the screenplay, says he's always been interested in music. He cast country singer Dwight Yoakam as an abusive boyfriend in "Sling Blade."
"I play with a lot of friends of mine and stuff, just messing around, and write a song every now and then," he says. "I had always wanted to do it but I wanted to wait for the right time. I wanted to wait until the music business was interested in me doing it... I wanted it totally separate from the movies."
Thornton, who also directed last year's "All The Pretty Horses," starring Matt Damon, will be seen later this year in "Wakin' Up In Reno" opposite Charlize Theron and Patrick Swayze. The film is due out in September.
