"During this country's long and varied history, songs that lift the spirit have proven to be a distinctly American cultural trait," compilation producer Tom Vickers said in a statement. "Whether speaking to slaves and field hands during the Civil War era, the millions of displaced workers during the Great Depression, the black and white marchers during the Civil Rights movement, or simply to people's inner emotions this collection contains many of the songs that this country has been singing throughout the past 150 years."
Among the offerings on the set is a previously unreleased recording of Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'" by Joan Baez. The artist also posts two other tracks on the album, a take on Phil Ochs' "There But for Fortune," which originally appeared on her 1965 album "Five," and a duet with Dylan on his "With God on Our Side," which was featured on both of her 1963 Vanguard live albums "Joan Baez in Concert Part 1" and "Part 2."
Also featured is a previously unreleased live performance of Curtis Mayfield's classic "People Get Ready" by the Chambers Brothers (a studio version appeared on their 1967 album "The Time Has Come").
