Lena Dunham is no stranger to controversy and criticism. As an outspoken public figure who shares her opinion on various topics -- including her support of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton -- the Girls star often receives backlash on Twitter and elsewhere for her views.
However, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Dunham commended her friend Taylor Swift for holding her thoughts to herself during a heated presidential cycle, while generally keeping it cool over a decade-long career.
Swift was under constant fire this past year, with fans expecting her to loudly support Clinton, as a self-proclaimed "feminist." The political silence caused a public questioning of the authenticity of her beliefs. Dunham supported her superstar friend, commenting, “When you talk about politics, people straight up tweet you the floor plan of your house and say they’re coming to your house.”
The actress continued to applaud Swift’s career approach, despite the media’s scrutinizing of the superstar’s every move. "When I met her, she was newly 22, and she was a f--king seasoned pro at this stuff," she recalls. “Watching the way that she understands the vicissitudes of the cycle, and she just keeps making her work -- that’s just really impressive to me.”
Dunham, currently wrapping up the final season of Girls, said she hopes to follow in her friend’s footsteps by constantly creating new projects and continuing to do what she loves, without being “a slave to public opinion.”
