Taking home the nonclassical producer of the year honor and the best compilation soundtrack album citation for "O Brother, Where Art Thou?," T Bone Burnett was a smiling man behind his shades. "Things have changed, as the man said," he said. "Radio doesn't have the stranglehold it once had on the distribution of music, to say the least."
Burnett said he expected the traditionally based collection of country, folk, and bluegrass music to do well. "I have to say, I did," he said. "I don't mean to sound pompous. Everybody thought I was insane. I produced the Counting Crows, which sold 8 million, and the Wallflowers, which sold 6 million. It seemed to be like one of those. Except instead of one good singer, we had 12, 15 great singers."
In regard to working with filmmakers, the movie's directors, Joel and Ethan Coen, are tops. "They're the most collaborative, intelligent, subversive artists I've ever gotten a chance to work with," he said. As previously reported, the trio have started DMZ, a joint-venture record label through Columbia, with a new album from Grammy winner and "O Brother" artist Ralph Stanley as the first release.
"Lady Marmalade" co-producer Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott won a second Grammy, for her solo rap performance of "Get Ur Freak On." "You have four women, baby divas coming together and not being competitive," she said. "It shows in the performance; it shows on the ["Lady Marmalade"] record."
The song's original performer, Patti LaBelle, made an appearance at the Grammys, and Elliott confesses that she and the legend had just met. "Yesterday was the first day I met Patti, and she said 'I wanted to meet you,' " Elliott said. "I was stuck for a minute. What everybody doesn't know is that on the track I say, 'Everybody give it up for Patti LaBelle.' It's hard to do remakes, and the person who did it first, you're scared they're going to say, 'Oh, that bass line was awful and ...,' but she loved it."
Elliott has plans for an upcoming album with rapper Eve. "It's one thing to get guys on a record, but to get two females on a record, it's historic because you know how girls can be," she said.
Linkin Park, who won best hard rock performance for the hit single "Crawling," have a remix album planned for release by Warner Bros. in a few months, to be followed by an album of new songs at year's end. "It's kind of like a re-interpretation album; it's revisiting the tracks," guitarist Brad Delson said of the remix project, which won't necessarily be the usual guest star-driven collection. "We came to the label with the idea. We've redone the vocals. Really the people we're working with are not the most mainstream artists. We're trying to go for a little more underground, and some people we know that are unsigned. But we feel we are really strong."
Expect remixes from Dilated Peoples' Evidence and Orgy's Jay Gordon, with possible contributions from Prince Paul and the Crystal Method. Although Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution tour with Cypress Hill has concluded, the group will join Korn and Static-X for a hard-rock tripleheader March 2 at the Foro Sol in Mexico City.
They Might Be Giants, the cult-favorite duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell, took the award for best song written for a motion picture, television or other visual medium for "Boss of Me," the theme song of the Fox sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle."
The jingle was written by the duo a couple of years ago. "It was an unfinished song fragment, and it happened to be the perfect length for a TV theme," Flansburgh said. "It was pretty much a cold call from the show's creator, Linwood Boomer. He's a longtime fan. We didn't know how good an opportunity this was going to be. They sent us the first script, and it was such a crazy show." The snipper has since been expanded into a full song that appeared on last year's "Malcolm" soundtrack (Restless).
Flasnburgh also offered advice for other artists who might feel frustrated or stuck in gear. "Any band on a major label, we recommend leaving," he said. "An amazing number of things have happened to us since we left a very large company we will not name" (the duo used to be signed to Elektra).
The team has been approached to work on the next "Austin Powers" film installment and has recorded a theme for TV's "America's Most Wanted." "It's an instrumental, so don't be scared," Flansburgh said.
