Singer songwriter Elliott Smith swayed in and out of the spotlight throughout his career, amassing lifelong fans with his critically acclaimed third studio album Either/Or in 1997. This year, the seminal album celebrates its 20th anniversary with an expanded reissued LP including four previously unheard studio recordings and five live performances as bonus tracks.

Kill Rock Stars, Smith’s former label, has accompanied this announcement with a never-before-heard studio recording of the cult figure's “I Figured You Out.”

The song was originally recorded in 1995 by Smith as a demo for longtime friend and fellow folk musician Mary Lou Lord for her Martian Saints EP. According to a recording of an intimate 1997 Arizona performance, Smith gave the song to Lord because it was a “stupid pop song” that sounded “too much like the f--king Eagles.” Despite his self-criticism, his signature ear for quiet melody and vaguely heartbreaking lyricism make this a recording many Smith fans will cherish.

Either/Or: Expanded Edition is out on March 10 through Kill Rock Stars, where you can pre-order the reissue here. Take a listen to “I Figured You Out” below.
