Rhino 'X'-cavates Reissues
Rhino has readied a second batch of expanded reissues from seminal California punk act X for May 21 release. The three albums, 1983's "More Fun in the New World," 1985's "Ain't Love Grand," and 1987's "See How We Are," come on the heels of last year's reissues of 1980's "Los Angeles," 1981's "Wild Gift," and 1982's "Under the Big Black Sun."
"More Fun in the New World" was X's fourth and final album with producer/Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and features such favorites as "I See Red," "We're Having Much More Fun," and a cover of Jerry Lee Lewis' "Breathless." The new edition sports previously unreleased demo and remix versions of "I Must Not Think Bad Thoughts," "Poor Girl," "Devil Doll," and "True Love Pt. #2."
"Ain't Love Grand" finds the band switching gears with producer Michael Wagener, best known for his work with such metal bands as Great White and Motley Crue. Although Wagener smoothed out some of X's rough edges, "Ain't Love Grand" features "Burning House of Love," perhaps X's most widely heard song. The reissue includes an extended cover of the Troggs' "Wild Thing," a demo for "My Goodness," and a cover of the Replacements' "I Will Dare."
Guitarist Billy Zoom departed prior to "See How We Are," replaced by Tony Gilkyson. Wagener was also not retained as producer, as newcomer Alvin Clark scaled back the studio polish to illuminate the gorgeous title track, "4th of July" (written by the Blasters'/sometimes X collaborator Dave Alvin), and "In the Time It Takes." Included on the reissue are a cover of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" and demos of "I'm Lost," "In the Time It Takes," the title cut, and "Holiday Story."
