'X Factor' Alum Jeff Gutt Rumored to Be New Stone Temple Pilots Frontman, Releases New Cover
Is X Factor alum Jeff Gutt the new singer of Stone Temple Pilots?
The season three runner-up -- who currently fronts his own band, Rival City -- reportedly tried out for the band during an open audition held on their website earlier this year. A source confirms to Billboard that Gutt will perform with the group this Saturday night at a private show.
According to Entertainment Tonight, Gutt and the band members went into rehearsal in Hollywood this week, and is expected to hit the road next year performing classic hits as well as new songs. Entertainment Weekly additionally received comment from a band rep who says the group "has been rehearsing with several singers over the past few weeks," and insists that the members of STP "haven’t made a decision yet.”
Original Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland died passed away last year, and a toxicology report revealed he died of mixed drug toxicity, with cocaine, ethanol, and methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) in his system. Other factors contributed to his death, which was ruled as an accident -- he suffered from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and had a history of asthma and multi-substance dependence.
Gutt was a standout on X Factor in its third season, with well-received performances of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and Radioheads' "Creep" as he competed on Kelly Rowland's team.
In the meantime, Stone Temple Pilots -- Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz -- have not removed the open-call submission form from their website. Gutt's band Rival City is still actively releasing music, including a cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" -- just released today (Nov. 17), featuring a message from Gutt on its Facebook page that does not reference the STP gig. The song is now available on iTunes.
"Over the last few months I have been feeling more and more compelled to record a song that speaks to the problems and social injustices we see throughout our country now almost daily.
From the police shootings, racism, dishonest media and this insane election season to the political riots and protests, there has been so much hate spread throughout this country and it is truly saddening.
I decided to do a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”. Even though this song was written over 40 years ago - we still face the same bullshit today. What the f--k is going on?” -Jeff
