Romeo Santos, whose “Propuesta Indecente” made history last week as the all-time top song in the history of Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, has signed a worldwide publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group, Billboard has learned.

Snagging Santos is a huge coup for UMPG and a major feather in the cap of Alexandra Lioutikoff, who came in to lead the company’s Latin division earlier this year.

Santos’ compositions were long administered by indie Mayimba Music, who did an outstanding job of taking his work to the world. This, however, will be Santos’ first publishing deal with a major. UMPG will now represent all his solos works, including Formula Vol.1 and Formula Vol. 2, which topped Latin sales charts in the U.S., The King Stays King: Sold Out at Madison Square Garden, and Santos’ upcoming third solo studio album, slated for release in 2017.

“I’m extremely proud to welcome Romeo Santos to the Universal Music Publishing family,” said UMPG chairman/CEO Jody Gerson. “He’s an inspiring artist and top songwriter who is conquering the world on his own terms. I can’t wait to hear what’s next."

Santos, said Lioutikoff, “is as big as it gets. His massive appeal as an artist crosses all genres and borders, and we look forward to helping further expand opportunities for him in both the Anglo and Latino markets.”

Santos made early marks in publishing as the lead singer and songwriter for bachata group Aventura, which emerged at the forefront of a new urban/bachata trend in the early 2000s. When the group disbanded in 2011, Santos broke out as a soloist and signed a recording deal with Sony, amassing a succession of hits, including six No. 1s on the Hot Latin Songs chart. Santos was named ASCAP Latin Songwriter of the Year five years in a row, and this year was also named ASCAP’s Songwriter/Artist of the Year.

Although Santos is known for his contemporary take on bachata, the traditional music of the Dominican Republic, he has also collaborated and recorded with a slew of mainstream acts, including Drake, Usher and Nicki Minaj. He also appeared in the film Fast and Furious 7.

Santos’ biggest hit remains “Propuesta Indecente,” which spent 123 out of 125 weeks in the top five of Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, an astonishing round. The song’s video has more than 1 billion YouTube views.

In addition to his recording and songwriting career, Santos is also the CEO of the newly created Roc Nation Latino.
