Rolling Stone's Nathan Brackett Named Amazon Music Editorial Head

The longtime magazine staffer jumps to the tech side for a newly-created position.

Nathan Brackett, Rolling Stone's executive editor, is leaving the iconic music magazine to take a job at Amazon Music in the newly created position of head of editorial, Billboard has learned.

The news comes on the heels of Amazon's Oct. 12 launch announcement of its 3-tiered Amazon Music Unlimited streaming service, which works in tandem with Alexa, the company's Echo smart speaker. 

Brackett, 47, will work out of Amazon's Seattle Office in the music department headed by Steve Boom. He leaves Wenner Media's flagship property after working there for 20 years, including as executive editor for the past three years and deputy editor for six. Brackett was previously music editor of Time Out New York and an associate editor at Musician Magazine

Christian Hoard, another longtime Rolling Stone staffer, will take over Brackett's duties in the music editorial department.
Rolling Stone, which was founded by Jann Wenner in 1967 and turns 50 next year, has recently undergone several major business changes: In late September, the publication sold off a 49 percent stake to BandLab Technologies, a Singapore based digital music company start-up for an undisclosed sum. A recent Wall Street Journal story on the transaction reported that advertising pages for the magazine were down 14 percent between January and August of 2016 compared to the year prior. The magazine is still facing lawsuits stemming from its since-retracted 2014 article about a gang rape at the University of Virginia.
