Watch Lin-Manuel Miranda Rewrite 'Hamilton' Lyrics at Clinton Broadway Fundraiser
Lin-Manuel Miranda remixed the lyrics to the Hamilton song "The World Was Wide Enough" on Monday night (Oct. 17) at the star-studded "Stronger Together" Broadway benefit for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Like comedian Billy Crystal -- who repeatedly took shots at Clinton White House rival Donald Trump during his set -- Miranda and former co-star Renee Elise Goldsberry focused their attention on praising the former First Lady while taking some not-so-subtle digs at the real estate mogul.
Switching up the song's intro ("there are 10 things you need to do"), the pair rapped some new Clinton-focused lyrics: "Call some undecideds with your crew/ Your cousins in Ohio/ Maybe try to flip them blue... We know that our Hillary's no quitter/ We watch as her opponent fiddles with his Twitter." Other suggestions: get registered to vote, post Hillary signs on your line, remember to go high when they go low and don't forget to vote in your home state.
Miranda got a roar of applause when he asked the crowd, "I have only one overwhelming feeling: anyone here wan to shatter a glass ceiling?" He even gave Clinton running mate a Cypress Hill-biting shout-out: "Watch Hillary examine the terrain/ Watch her campaign with her man Tim Kaine -- Tim Kaine in the membrane, Tim Kaine in the brain!"
The benefit was live-streamed and featured sets from Josh Groban, Bette Midler, Neil Patrick Harris, Hugh Jackman, Sara Bareilles and appearances from former president Bill Clinton, Barbra Streisand, Lena Dunham, Chelsea Clinton, Angela Bassett, Joel Grey, Sienna Miller, Sarah Jessica Parker, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Julia Roberts and Helen Mirren.
