The artist is also preparing to release a book of poetry and is working on a soundtrack album.
"Smofe + Smang: Live in Minneapolis" was recorded at Minneapolis' Woman's Club Theatre on Feb. 27 and features 18 songs, including Soul Coughing nuggets such "Lazybones," "Soft Serve," "Circles," and "True Dreams of Wichita." More recent solo material such as "Busting Up a Starbux," "Lisa Ling and Lucy Liu," and "Thank You, Lord, for Sending Me the F-Train" is also included. Only 1,500 copies of the album were pressed for the online release, which will be available beginning July 8.
Also set for release the same day is "Slanky," a book of Doughty's poetry published by Soft Skull Press. The book, which was completed in 1995, has been available to fans at Soul Coughing shows in a self-published form, but now will be released to the public for the first time, with updated cover art.
In other news, Doughty has been working on songs and other music pieces for the soundtrack to the forthcoming movie "Evenhand" (Cypress Films), a police story based in Texas and directed by Joseph Pierson ("Cherry," "Julian Po").
Soul Coughing, which broke up in 2000, released a greatest-hits/retrospective set, "Lust in Phaze: The Best Of Soul Coughing," in March on Rhino.
