Music video director Bille Woodruff will make his feature directorial debut on the film, which is being produced by Universal's Marc Platt and music mogul Andre Harrel. Shooting is scheduled to begin Sept. 9 in Toronto.
The project is the second for Universal and the 12-year-old rapper, who, as previously reported, will also star in the studio's feature "Shorty," which Platt is producing. That project is currently in development with Jesse Dylan directing and Lil' Romeo's father, rapper/No Limit label head Master P, also producing.
"Honey," written by Alonzo Brown and Kim Watson, is a music-driven coming-of-age drama about a sexy, tough inner-city woman named Honey (Alba) who hopes to start a neighborhood dance studio and subsequently is discovered by a music mogul. After she finds success as a hot new video choreographer, her dream is threatened when her mentor blackballs her for not sleeping with him.
Lil' Romeo will play Benny, a young street kid from a broken family who happens to be a gifted dancer. Although the temptation to sell drugs is all around him, Honey persuades him to focus on his dancing talents.
Lil' Romeo's self-titled Soulja/Priority debut, featuring the single "My Baby," debuted at No. 5 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 6 on The Billboard 200. The set earned him the 2001 Billboard Music Awards rap artist of the year honor, while "My Baby" snagged the rap single of the year award.
